HISTORICAL CHRONOLOGY

Any historical episode is determined by two essential elements: time and space, constant factors that determine its place in the evolution of a human community.

The land between Bucegi and Piatra Craiului has determined a series of significant episodes, from prehistory to the present, hosted by a major geographical and historical point: the Bran Pass.

1211 - 19181

BRAN FORTRESS

Bran Fortress, built at the end of the 14th century, strategically dominates the pass connecting Transylvania with Wallachia. Originally built as a defense point against Ottoman invasions and for commercial control of the area, the fortress played an essential role both militarily and economically.

Over the centuries, Bran has been a place of confrontation, a customs house, a royal residence and then a museum. Its medieval walls, adapted and restored in different eras, keep alive the memory of a complex history, which combines legends, politics and tradition.

1920 - 19471

ROYAL RESIDENCE

After 1918, Transylvania became part of Greater Romania. On December 1, 1920, the inhabitants of Braşov, by unanimous decision of the City Council, led by Mayor Karl Schnell, offered Bran Castle to Queen Marie of Romania, described as "a great queen, spreading her blessing wherever she went and thus conquering, with an irresistible impetus, the hearts of all the inhabitants of the country".

The castle became the favorite residence of Queen Marie, who restored and redeveloped it for use by members of the royal family.

THE MYTH OF COUNT DRACULA

DRACULA

Dracula, the character of the novel of the same name written at the end of the 19th century by the Irishman Bram Stoker, is a Transylvanian count, owner of a castle built somewhere on top of a high cliff, from where he watches over the river valley winding through the Principality of Transylvania.

He is often confused with Vlad Tepes, the Wallachian prince, lord of the now ruined castle in the Principality of Wallachia. As Bran Castle is the only one in Transylvania that matches Bram Stoker's description, the whole world refers to it as Dracula's Castle.
